KABUL, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan witnessed a remarkable surge in domestic tourism, with nearly 4 million people visiting popular destinations across the country during the four-day Eid al-Adha holidays that concluded on Saturday evening, the Ministry of Information and Culture announced late Tuesday.
The figures represent a substantial increase compared to previous years, highlighting a growing appetite for travel within the country as stability improves and interest in Afghanistan's rich cultural and natural heritage rises.
The ministry expressed a strong commitment to further developing and strengthening the tourism sector, positioning it as a vital pillar for economic growth and cultural exchange.
In its statement, the ministry called on citizens to play an active role in safeguarding tourist sites by preserving the environment, respecting local customs and traditions, maintaining cleanliness, and protecting historical and natural landmarks.
Extreme summer heat in lowland provinces prompted many travelers to seek refuge in cooler, mountainous regions.
