Spain's Paula Badosa produced the biggest win of her career Friday, upsetting top-seeded Ashleigh Barty of Australia 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Volvo Car Open at Charleston, S.C.
Badosa, a 23-year-old who is ranked 71st in the world, is through to the semifinals of a WTA 500-level event for the first time in her career.
"I can't believe it. I still can't believe I just beat the No. 1 in the world," Badosa said postmatch. "I was nervous, but I served very well, and I think that was the key of the match. It was a tough match, but I was there until the last moment."
Badosa's next opponent will be 15th-seeded Russian Veronika Kudermetova, who beat American Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-4.
In the other semifinal, 12th-seeded Tunisian Ons Jabeur will oppose Montenegro's Danka Kovinic. Jabeur knocked out 13th-seeded American Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-3, and Kovinic rallied past 11th-seeded Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-1.
