Qualifier Hailey Baptiste earned his second career WTA Tour victory when she beat fellow U.S. player Caroline Dolehide 6-3, 6-3 Tuesday in the first round of the Volvo Car Open in Charleston, S.C.
Baptiste, a 19-year-old Washington, D.C., native ranked 216th in the world, earned her the only other WTA Tour at the 2019 Citi Open in her hometown. She lost in the first round of the U.S. Open last year and in the first round of the Miami Open last month.
Two other U.S. players, Sloane Stephens and Shelby Rogers, also produced straight-set wins Tuesday.
Canada's Leylah Fernandez upset 16th-seeded Shuai Zhang of China 6-3, 6-1, while third-seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, sixth-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain, 11th-seeded Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan and 12th-seeded Ons Jabeur of Tunisia won in straight sets.

Chilean qualifier Daniela Seguel pulled out an upset in the first round at Bogota, Colombia, rallying to beat fourth-seeded Clara Tauson of Denmark 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Seguel, who is ranked 213th, had a big edge in first-serve rate, putting 71 percent in play compared to Tauson's 51 percent. Tauson also helped the underdog with 11 double faults.
The tournament's second seeded, Spain's Sara Sorribes Tormo, also lost her opening-round match, falling to Italy's Sara Errani 7-5, 7-5.
Third-seeded Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands, fifth-seeded Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia and seventh-seeded Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic all posted straight-set wins.
