After upsetting top-seeded Dominic Thiem 7-6 (4), 7-5 of Austria earlier Saturday, Italian qualifier Gianluca Mager took an early edge in the semifinals before play was suspended at the Rio Open in Rio de Janeiro.
Mager, ranked 128th in the world, took down the world's fourth-ranked player in the quarterfinals in the morning. That set up a semifinal matchup with Hungarian lucky loser Attila Balazs, who recovered from a slow start against Spanish qualifier Pedro Martinez to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in his quarterfinal.
Mager led the semifinal against Balazs 7-6 (4), 3-3 when play was suspended by rain. Mager will serve at 0-0 when play resumes on Sunday.
In the other semifinal, third-seeded Cristian Garin of Chile seized a 6-4, 4-4 advantage against fifth-seeded Borna Coric of Croatia before play was halted. Garin will serve at 15-15 when play resumes. Neither player in that semifinal was in action earlier Saturday.
Open 13 Provence
Second-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece returned to the final in Marseille, France, with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan.
Tsitsipas, who topped Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin in the final to win the tournament last year, needed just 68 minutes to complete the win, breaking his opponent three times and saving two of the three break points he faced.
In the final, Tsitsipas will face seventh-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, who downed Frenchman Gilles Simon 7-5, 7-6 (2). Auger-Aliassime, a 19-year-old ranked 18th in the world, is seeking his first career title.
Delray Beach (Fla.) Open
Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan bounced back from an ugly first set to down sixth-seeded Ugo Humbert of France 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 and reach the final in Delray Beach, Fla.
Following multiple rain delays, Nishioka regrouped and finished strong, winning 27 of the 37 total points in the third set. He broke Humbert's serve four straight times to finish the match, including in the final game of the second set.
Nishioka will face either No. 2 Milos Raonic of Canada or No. 4 Reilly Opelka of the U.S. in the final. The semifinal between Raonic and Opelka was postponed until Sunday due to rain.
