Afghanistan Sun Tuesday 24th March, 2009

South Africa has refused to issue the Dalai Lama with a visa to meet other Nobel laureates in the country.

The government has made the decision, saying his visit would overshadow the country's preparations to host the 2010 World Cup.

The Tibetan spiritual leader was invited to South Africa by the country's three peace prize winners Nelson Mandela, FW de Klerk and Archbishop Desmond Tutu for a special meeting.

South Africa has denied China put pressure on it to deny the visa.
